Found this lecture (Gary Taubes: Adiposity 101) while researching overweight women with malnourished children for a paper I'm writing. I found this fascinating. It's long, about an hour and a half, and he takes a while to get to the point but once he does you realize why he gave you so much background. The background is necessary to convince you of the weight of his conclusions.

He basically turns conventional nutritional wisdom on its head by showing that the German scientists of the 1930's were actually correct. Much of their research was disregarded after Hitler - even though the science was legit. He shows how the amount of calories you take in affects your energy level, it's not a matter of reducing calories gets rid of fat. Less calories means less energy. He also shows how the body converts things into fat and diets high in carbohydrates (for many people but not all - depends on their genetic makeup) will be converted into fat and stored no matter how many calories one takes in. It explains how obese mothers can have starving children even though they give their kids more than they eat themselves. Very interesting to me. I'm using some of his theories to see if I can alter my own body weight - I'll let you know how it goes.
